How should you celebrate Mother’s Day this year? Our mothers spend their whole lives looking out for us, and they deserve to be showered with love every day, but especially on Mother’s Day. With Mother’s Day coming up in just a few weeks (May 9, 2021), now is the time to start planning your celebrations and gifts to ensure the day is memorable for her.
I have compiled a number of gift ideas for you – they range from free, homemade options to more expensive presents! Be mindful of your budget at this time, it’s easy to get carried away shopping for the ones we love, but set an intention of what you will spend before you go shopping.
How To Celebrate Mother’s Day (With Virtual Options)
Whether you are able to see your mom or not, there are still plenty of ways you can celebrate Mother’s Day this year!
Prepare breakfast in bed / brunch – Don’t know what to make? Have no fear, this list contains everything from oat and apple pancakes, to gluten free chocolate buckwheat waffles! Say what!? I’ve never heard of waffles made of buckwheat but they sound like a great option for the health conscious mothers out there!
- Virtual Option: send her prepared meals with UberEats or PostMates! Make sure to call a few days ahead since restaurants will most likely be slammed on Mother’s Day weekend.
Take the day off – don’t allow any work or other distractions to interrupt this day, spend the day doing puzzles with her, going on walks, or watching movies! She deserves your undivided attention!
- Virtual Option: Set aside some time to Zoom (use these festive backgrounds for your call) or call her without any distractions. You can also play trivia and other games virtually over the app, Houseparty. Airbnb also has unique virtual experiences like a cheese making class and a sleepy meditation with a sheep that would be fun to do together!
Pamper her – do not let her do anything around the house! Make sure she’s not cleaning or cooking for the whole day!
Shower her with love – make sure you express to her how much she means to you and how grateful you are for her. During our busy lives sometimes we just need to take a few minutes and open up about how much our loved ones mean to us.
- Virtual Option: Deliver her flowers! If you’re in the area, do a driveby parade with your family and friends and hold out decorated posters of your favorite things about her so she can feel appreciated!
How To Pick The Perfect Gift For Your Mom
Have you heard of the 5 love languages? They are Words Of Affirmation, Gifts, Acts of Service, Quality Time, and Physical Touch. I truly believe that we all give and receive love differently, and it is important to understand how your loved ones express and accept love.
Think back to when your mother seemed the happiest- was it because you got her a thoughtful gift, or maybe because you vacuumed the whole house? If you’re at a loss, encourage her to take the love language quiz to find out and cater the gift to match her love language!
Try to recall- is there anything your mom has hinted at wanting recently? Maybe a new skincare product, or a photo album? No matter what your budget is, you can make your mom feel special. Below is a list of Mother’s Day gifts ranging from a handwritten letter, to booking a traveling plan.
FREE GIFT IDEAS FOR MOTHER’S DAY
Below are a list of thoughtful gifts to give your mom on Mother’s Day that are free! All they require is a little time and effort.
- Plan 12 dates for your parents – take the pressure off your parents by planning some dates for them to enjoy!
- Create a book club with your mom– I love this idea! Plan to read a book once a month and meet up to discuss over some drinks (you can even do this over FaceTime, Skype or Zoom!) If you can’t decide on what book to start with, look into Reese Witherspoon’s book club!
- Make a video montage of your favorite memories – this one will probably make her cry, but it is something she can watch whenever she misses you!
- Throw a fancy tea party– Get out your finest china, make homemade cookies (or macarons you made with the kit I mention later on) and throw a tea party!
- Create a music playlist– does anyone make mixed CDs anymore? I used to love making and receiving those. You can make a custom CD or Spotify playlist for your mom!
