One of my goals for 2021 was to find the joy in cooking and with the help of HelloFresh I actually did it!
All of my life I’ve been quite a lazy cook. I couldn’t be bothered to make any special meals so my meals ended up being boring and bland. Cooking was a chore I was always trying to get out of.
Earlier this month I received a coupon for HelloFresh and decided to sign up for the next few weeks.
The coupon spans 4 weeks but it allows you to cancel or pause at any time which is why I felt comfortable using it.
I’m on week 4 now and I’ve never been more excited about cooking!
HelloFresh gets rid of the most tedious parts of cooking and makes the process enjoyable. Their recipes are also easy to use and make you feel like a chef!
Here are the reasons I’ve fallen in love with HelloFresh:
Every week you have a choice between 23 meals – This is simple and just the right amount so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
The recipes are easy to follow and include pictures
You don’t have to worry about any ingredients (besides the staples like olive oil, butter, salt, pepper or sugar)
The recipes are delicious and you’ll feel like a chef!
The recipe cards share how many calories each meal is
HelloFresh Review: What I Dislike About HelloFresh
A lot of the recipes seem to include rice or pasta as part of the dish so I’d like to see them incorporate some other sides like quinoa, cous cous or buckwheat.
Some dishes weren’t filling for my boyfriend (he’s over 6 ft and over 200 pounds so he needs a bit more food than me!)
You can’t repick the same meal every week. This is meant to make things more exciting but some of these we loved so much that we wanted to order again!
Takes away your creative liberties- my boyfriend doesn’t love HelloFresh but he’s really into cooking.
The individually packaging for each ingredient seems wasteful
If you forget to pick out your meals 4 days before your meals are due, they will pick them for you.
They do not offer gluten-free, dairy-free or nut-free meal plans so you have to review the ingredients yourself.
Despite some cons I am genuinely very happy with HelloFresh. I will note that if you love cooking creatively and coming up with meals yourself then you might find it restricting but for those of you who get overwhelmed.
How HelloFresh Works
HelloFresh is incredibly easy to use. When you sign up you choose whether you want a meal plan for two or four people and then select if you want 2-5 recipes delivered each week.
The price for 2 meals per week is $12.49/meal plus $8.99 for shipping. It is cheaper to purchase more weekly recipes. The price for 4 weekly meals becomes $8.99/meal with shipping staying the same.
It is also more cost effective to choose a plan with 4 servings. This could help you have leftovers if you have a smaller family!
For 4 servings it ranges from $8.99 to $7.49 per meal with shipping being $8.99.
You can schedule your meals up to 6 weeks in advance, pause at any time or even cancel if needed!
Once you’ve chosen your plan, you can pick your meals and voila! They’ll be at your doorstep later that week!
Everything comes individually packaged and measured out, ready for you to start cooking!
The Best HelloFresh recipes
I’ve honestly loved the majority of the HelloFresh recipes I’ve tried so far! But, here are the ones I would, without a doubt, order again. I’ve also included pictures of the actual final products!
Mozz-Stuffed Caprese Burgers
This was a delicious burger with an Italian twist! I’d never had anything like it so I loved how unique it was. The homemade burger patty turned out savory (you mixed it with pesto!), and the roasted potatoes were crispy and perfect.
I’m dairy free so I ended up making my meal sans cheese but I made my boyfriend’s the way it was intended to be!
I’ve made stuffed peppers before but never like this! The HelloFresh twist on these had you mix stock concentrate into the sausage mixture which was a nice touch. They turned out really juicy and filling.
This was Tyler’s favorite HelloFresh meal so far! It had just the right amount of kick to it and the sauce was delicious. I might’ve ranked this one higher if I made it the way it was intended with the dairy based sauce but I still loved it!
Every Tex-Mex meal we’ve gotten from HelloFresh makes this list! It’s my favorite cuisine and this beef bowl was simple but powerful. It even came with blue corn tortilla chips which are bomb!
If I could eat taquitos, tacos, or burritos every day I’d be happy. This HelloFresh recipe includes non-fried taquitos, guacamole, and pico de gallo. They weren’t spicy and each bite was full of taste.
We haven’t gotten too many pasta or spaghetti meals but I’m glad we picked this one! It is a vegetarian HelloFresh meal and between the herb blend, sliced almonds and sun dried tomatoes it really delivered.
These were great for a quick meal but for dairy free people they were pretty plain. I wish they had some meat on it to help me forget I’m not eating cheese…
I’ve never made roasted carrots like this before but I was pleasantly surprised! HelloFresh has quite a few bulgogi options and we really enjoyed this bowl.
Unfortunately, not all of the recipes were worth writing home about. These two recipes are my least favorite ones so far and I wouldn’t order them again.
Firecracker Meatballs
These meatballs were yummy but nothing special compared to the other recipes. Perhaps I started expecting too much from the HelloFresh menu.
It could be that I’m not great at cooking duck but I didn’t like this recipe. I’ve never made duck before so maybe we can just cough it up to that. The duck was tough and rubbery, but the mashed potatoes and side salad were good!
Moving forward I think we will order 3 recipes weekly and the rest of the nights my boyfriend will cook something he comes up with! He misses the creativity of cooking his own dishes. All in all though HelloFresh is an amazing meal service and I have loved using it!
