Spread the love

My biggest financial goal for this year is to stop penny pinching on things that will improve my life. I want to learn to have a healthier relationship with money and spend it on things that align with my values.

Money minimalism is all about improving your finances so that you can buy things with intention. Minimalism is centered around the idea that you should embrace everything you own and avoid spending on items that do not serve you.

So, here are 13 frugal things I aim to no longer do.

Fast fashion

I used to shop second hand to save money, but now I love it. It’s more sustainable and it’s great for the wallet. Another goal of mine is to start supporting small businesses and boutiques more as well. Higher quality items in lieu of cheaper clothes.

Avoiding appetizers and drinks at dinner

Ordering appetizers and drinks used to feel like a huge waste of money to me. But, oftentimes appetizers are a great way to curb my hunger and enjoy the variety a restaurant has to offer. I also no longer penny pinch on drinks if I’m eager for something fruity to pair with my meal.

Disregarding valet

Finding parking in the city can be time consuming and a huge hassle. If the valet is reasonably priced I now opt for the convenience and efficiency of valet.

Getting the cheapest most inconvenient flight

I used to pride myself in finding the cheapest flights possible but they also ended up being extremely inconvenient. I would have multiple layovers, leave at odd times, and be worried about missing connecting flights. Now I value my time more and look for the most convenient (whilst still affordable) flights.

Being frugal in regards to my pets

My boyfriend and I love spoiling our pets! We try to buy them toys and treats often.

Only drinking water at home and avoiding snacks

Our grocery budget used to be one of the largest ways we saved money in our household. We were extremely frugal and avoided snacks, juices and drinks. We love now being able to afford chips and hummus!

Bargain shopping at grocery stores

This might seem crazy coming from a financial blogger, but we rarely look at prices when grocery shopping now. We opt for food that is nutritious and delicious.

Using zip lock bags while kayaking

I just went kayaking this past weekend so this one is stuck in my mind. Some kayaking places charge for dry bags to put your valuables in and I used to always avoid paying for them and risked damaging my phone and losing my ID.

Not using lockers at theme parks

Why are lockers at theme parks so expensive?? This one still bothers me but getting a locker makes the theme park much more enjoyable! No more worrying about your items getting stolen or wet!

Finding the cheapest (& usually furthest) beach parking

Some beaches charge exorbitant prices for beach parking! I still try to find the cheapest parking options but every once in a while I’ll splurge on beach parking.

Taking the longer route to avoid toll roads

As a Realtor, I have to constantly be driving all over town so taking toll roads has been a long term goal of mine. They cut my drive time down significantly and I get to save on gas too!

Neglecting my backyard

I debated planting a garden since we are planning to move next year, but I’m so happy I did. It brings me so much joy and I am adding to it whenever I can!

Not organizing my clutter properly

Most of my home decor is thrifted but I’ve loved buying containers and spice racks to help organize my home.

Penny pinching isn’t always the best thing for us. If something brings you joy and aligns with your budget, then you should consider purchasing it! There’s no need to be frugal about every little thing.
